"The film is beautifully done. As befits the man whose life it documents, it is a message of faith, forgiveness and the heart's desire to be at peace with our Creator. It inspires the creativity that we all yearn to express in one form or another ~ until we become Light."

I just finished watching your latest film and I am
totally speechless. That was one of the most intriguing and moving films I
have ever watched. What an amazing story!!! You captured so many different
and fascinating aspects of this man's life. . . . I am absolutely
convinced that my vision of death and dying will forever be colored by the
philosophy and imagery that you were able to capture in this film. . . .
It's really a touching and beautiful story. Thanks for sharing it with me
. . . Great, great job!!! Congratulations to you both!!!

Until I Become
Light

I previewed an unfinished copy of Ray Schmitt’s newest biography of Robert
Singleton, a WV artist. This third film about a West Virginia artist is
much subtler because the artist himself is truly ethereal and brilliant.
About a two decades ago a series of films about abstract expressionism was
produced – “Strokes of Genius.” . . . hosted by Dustin Hoffman. I don’t
think that Dustin added much to the films, but Schmitt’s biography of
Singleton is as good as those award-winning films. Singleton is a rare
artist – he was recognized early, and has made a good living off of his
work. He has moved from Florida to Georgia to WV where he now resides. He
was on the board of the Kubler-Ross Foundation – founded by the woman who
revolutionized the American way of dying. Singleton himself was greatly
affected by his own father’s death, and then his partner’s from AIDS.

"Best Individual Profile Documentary", West Virginia Filmmaker's
Film Festival, 2003.

"Every once in a while a film, or story, or musical composition comes along that touches the very essence of who we are and touches our very soul. There were so many feelings that emerged as I watched "Until I Become Light"; sadness and compassion, awe and almost disbelief at the magnificent art that has come forth and then listening to the peace in Robert Singleton’s voice and feeling the love that he emanates."
